Why Security Council Needs More Permanent Members For UN’s Relevance? NewsMobile EIC Saurabh Shukla Explains

Published:

Amid growing calls for reforming the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), NewsMobile Editor-in-Chief Saurabh Shukla emphasized India’s long-standing advocacy for a more inclusive and representative Security Council.

NM EIC Shukla highlighted India’s role in forming the G4 coalition—comprised of India, Japan, Germany, and Brazil—aimed at expanding the council’s permanent membership. “India has been a key advocate for reforming the UNSC for a long time,” Shukla remarked.

Addressing the support from four of the five permanent UNSC members, Shukla stressed that India must act decisively. “Four members of the UN security council are speaking out emphatically about the reform, that the reform has to take place. India must take a queue and I believe diplomacy is the art of making things possible and I think we should take on this momentum by not only galvanising support amongst the members of the Security Council, the permanent members, but also the General assembly, because that’s going to be the first step.”

Talking about China, Shukla acknowledged the challenges but remained optimistic. “Conflicts often create new opportunities,” he noted. “India, along with some of the other permanent members, holds enough cards to influence China. While it’s difficult, it’s not impossible. Trade issues and diplomatic pressure from the US and its allies can potentially bring China to the negotiating table.”

NM EIC Shukla also underscored the importance of timing, noting that the current session of the UN General Assembly has built significant momentum for reform. “This is the right moment because the international community recognizes that the UN Security Council and the UN is ineffective without having countries like India on board, which can play a pivotal role in global affairs whether as a peacemaker or a unifier or or creating innovative solutions to the problems that the world faces.”
