New Delhi, 17th Sept. Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday stressed the need for a shift in male mindsets to ensure gender equality, during his address at the SheShakti 2024 event, held in Delhi. He highlighted the persistence of subtle gender discrimination and called for collective efforts to eradicate it.

Speaking at the event, Dhankhar emphasized that while women participate in various aspects of governance and contribute significantly to society, gender equality remains elusive. “Subtle gender discrimination is more dangerous than overt discrimination,” he said, urging for the creation of a non-discriminatory, level playing field for women in all sectors.

Dhankhar expressed strong disapproval of remarks that downplay violence against women, calling them “shameful.” He referred to comments dismissing the murder of a female doctor as a “symptomatic malaise” and asserted that such statements trivialize the brutality of such crimes.

The Vice-President lauded the recent provision for one-third reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Legislatures, calling it an “epochal development” that would strengthen women’s roles in policy-making and governance. He noted that this is a historic step towards holistic empowerment.

In his speech, Dhankhar also cautioned against self-serving individuals gaining undue prominence through event management and warned that commitment to national interest must take precedence over personal gains.

He praised the government’s efforts in promoting women-led development, noting significant changes brought about by initiatives such as Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Mudra, and the increasing participation of women in defense, space, and other key sectors.

Calling on women to “smash the glass ceiling,” Dhankhar encouraged them to lead the change rather than wait for it. He emphasized that women now hold the driver’s seat and must steer towards progress.

He concluded by underscoring the importance of education in achieving gender equality, asserting that “education is the most impactful transformative mechanism” to overcome societal inequities.
