Kangpokpi- Tensions erupted in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district when protesters clashed with security personnel, resulting in one death and 16 injuries. The violence occurred after protesters opposed Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s directive on the free movement of state-run buses, which was introduced by the Manipur government in a bid to ease public inconveniences.

The government of the state had launched bus services escorted by security from March 8, 2025, after the decision was taken on March 7. The buses, including an MST bus, along with a number of other vehicles such as LPG trucks and oil tankers, operated smoothly along routes between Imphal, Bishnupur, Churachandpur, and other places without any major obstructions.
However, when the MST bus was travelling on the Imphal-Kangpokpi-Senapati route, it was confronted with violent agitations from the protesters at Gamgiphai in Kangpokpi District. A mob numbering several people started stoning the bus, following which the security forces used tear gas and moderate force to react. Besides stone-throwing, the agitators obstructed the movement of buses and security forces by erecting roadblocks along the National Highway employing fallen trees, stones, burning tyres, etc.
The incident quickly escalated into violence when security forces came under attack from armed miscreants in the crowd who opened fire. In defense, the security forces fired back, and in the commotion, 27 security officials were injured and two officers severely injured. Though with aggressive actions, security forces had restraint and responded with minimum force to the aggression.
It is reported that 16 demonstrators were injured during the confrontations, with one of them later having died from their injuries. The violence also saw two security vehicles burnt by the demonstrators.
The state government is keeping a close eye on the situation and is ready to put in place extra security measures to avoid further interruptions to public services and ensure law and order in the area. The government is making efforts to ensure that the situation does not worsen and that the security of civilians and security forces remains a priority.
