New Delhi, 22nd Sept. During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ongoing visit to the United States, the US has returned 297 antiquities that were smuggled out of India. These artefacts, spanning centuries and regions, are invaluable pieces of India’s cultural heritage. Modi expressed his gratitude to President Joe Biden and the US government, acknowledging the deep cultural ties between the two nations and their joint commitment to combating the illicit trafficking of cultural properties.
In a message on X, Modi stated, “Deepening cultural connect and strengthening the fight against illicit trafficking of cultural properties. I am extremely grateful to President Biden and the US Government for ensuring the return of 297 invaluable antiquities to India.” He noted that these artefacts are not only part of India’s historical culture but are integral to its civilisation and consciousness.
The antiquities include a wide array of items, from an ‘apsara’ sculpture in sandstone from the 10th-11th century CE, to a Jain Tirthankar bronze from the 15th-16th century CE, and a terracotta vase from the 3rd-4th century CE. Some of the prominent pieces include Lord Ganesh and Lord Vishnu sculptures, showcasing India’s rich artistic traditions.
With the return of these artefacts, the total number of antiquities recovered by India since 2014 has now reached 640, with 578 of them being returned from the USA alone. This marks the largest repatriation of cultural items to India from any country.
This latest recovery highlights the continued efforts of the Indian government to reclaim stolen treasures. Modi’s personal diplomacy and proactive approach have been instrumental in these returns. Notably, during Modi’s 2021 visit to the US, 157 antiquities were handed over, including a 12th-century bronze Nataraja statue. After his 2023 visit, 105 artefacts were returned to India.
In addition to recoveries from the US, India has successfully reclaimed 16 artefacts from the UK and 40 from Australia, among others.
In July 2024, the US and India signed their first-ever ‘Cultural Property Agreement’ during the 46th World Heritage Committee meeting in New Delhi. This agreement is aimed at curbing the illicit trafficking of antiquities and reflects the growing cultural cooperation between the two nations.
The Indian government’s resolve to reclaim and preserve its cultural heritage for future generations is evident through these continued efforts. Modi’s diplomatic engagements have played a crucial role in these achievements, reaffirming India’s commitment to protecting its cultural identity.
