UPDATE: Below are photos of a person of interest wanted for questioning regarding the Midtown Manhattan homicide on Dec. 4. This does not appear to be a random act of violence; all indications are that it was a premediated, targeted attack.

Police appealed to the public to help identify the suspect, offering $10,000 for tips. According to a person familiar with the situation, they executed a search warrant on the HI New York City youth hostel on Manhattan’s Upper West Side on Wednesday. The suspect checked into the hostel using a fake New Jersey driver’s license and had been there since Nov. 30.
According to media reports, the shell casings left at the scene were emblazoned with the words “deny,” “defend”, and “depose”, multiple media outlets have reported, citing unnamed law enforcement sources.
The inscriptions on the ammunition resemble the title of a 2010 book titled Delay, Deny, Defend: Why Insurance Companies Don’t Pay Claims and What You Can Do About It. The book discusses the tactics insurance companies use to avoid paying claims.
Police have not announced a suspected motive in Thompson’s murder, but his wife told US media “there had been some threats” against her husband.
Thompson, who joined the insurer in 2004 and had served as CEO since 2021, received $10.2m in compensation the same year.
About The Incident
Thompson, 50, was shot in the back and leg around 6:45 am outside of the New York Hilton Midtown hotel, where UnitedHealth Group Inc. was hosting its investor day. Video showed the attacker waiting for Thompson – UnitedHealth’s insurance chief – upon his arrival at the hotel. The perpetrator approached the executive from behind and shot him multiple times before leaving on foot and then riding an electric bike toward Central Park.
While UnitedHealth had a security team at the hotel for its investor day, it didn’t have anyone stationed outside where the executive was shot, according to a person familiar with the matter. The company didn’t comment on the security situation.
