Washington, 2nd Oct. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Washington DC, where they discussed collaborative efforts to tackle regional and global challenges. This visit marks Jaishankar’s first trip to the U.S. capital since the third Modi government took office.
Following their meeting at the U.S. State Department’s Foggy Bottom headquarters, Blinken stated, “Together, the U.S. and India are working to address regional and global challenges. Our continued cooperation on the climate crisis and ways to promote regional security and prosperity were key topics of discussion.”
Jaishankar expressed his delight at the talks, noting that they followed up on recent bilateral discussions and the QUAD meetings. He mentioned that their discussions encompassed deepening bilateral cooperation, the situation in West Asia, recent developments in the Indian subcontinent, the Indo-Pacific region, and the ongoing situation in Ukraine.
This meeting follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent bilateral meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden in Delaware on September 21, which was followed by the QUAD Leaders’ Summit with leaders from Australia and Japan.
According to U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller, Jaishankar and Blinken emphasized their enduring commitment to deepening bilateral ties, coordinating on regional and global challenges, and advancing cooperation in critical and emerging technologies. Blinken also highlighted the significance of a “just and lasting peace for Ukraine” following Modi’s visit to Kyiv in August and noted discussions on expanding collaboration in clean energy initiatives to address the global climate crisis.
Welcoming Jaishankar, Blinken remarked on the unprecedented warmth and ambition in U.S.-India relations, underscoring their partnership across strategic technology sectors, space, semiconductors, and clean energy. He stated that both countries are increasingly working together to create new opportunities not just for their citizens but globally.
Earlier, Jaishankar participated in a discussion at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, where he acknowledged the significance of the recent meeting between Prime Minister Modi and President Biden, expressing optimism about the progress made in various areas since their last meeting. He reiterated the importance of addressing global issues collaboratively.
