Washington D.C., 17th Sept. The Strategic Clean Energy Partnership (SCEP) Ministerial, convened by U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm and Indian Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri, took place yesterday in Washington D.C. The meeting reviewed progress across various technical pillars, including Power & Energy Efficiency, Responsible Oil & Gas, Renewable Energy, Emerging Fuels & Technologies, and Sustainable Growth.
Both ministers praised the partnership’s progress in driving clean energy innovation, enhancing energy security, and accelerating transitions to clean energy. They emphasized the importance of building resilient and diversified supply chains for clean energy manufacturing.
In his address, the Prime Minister highlighted the need for a just and sustainable energy transition, advocating for reliable, affordable, and clean energy supplies. Energy trade was acknowledged as vital in supporting the national priorities of both nations.
Key achievements and future goals discussed include:
Renewable Energy Technology Action Platform (RETAP): Launched in August 2023, RETAP aims to develop roadmaps for hydrogen, energy storage, offshore wind, and geothermal technologies through research, pilot projects, and industry networks. The ministers expressed satisfaction with RETAP’s progress.
Hydrogen and Energy Storage: Collaboration on the National Centre for Hydrogen Safety and the 2nd International Conference on Green Hydrogen were welcomed. The launch of the public-private Energy Storage Task Force will address policy frameworks, safety, and innovative business models for energy storage.
Grid Integration and Power Distribution: The need for modernizing power distribution to ensure reliable power and supporting India’s smart metering and inverter-based resources was highlighted.
Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF): The ministers welcomed engagement on SAF, including workshops on R&D, supply chain development, and fuel certification. Two joint reports on SAF and biofuels are under development.
Transport Electrification: Collaboration on medium- and heavy-duty vehicle electrification, including workshops and expert exchanges, was applauded, along with the implementation of the PM eBus Sewa scheme for 10,000 e-buses in India.
Carbon Capture and Methane Abatement: Progress on carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), and methane abatement in the oil and gas sector was noted. An August 2024 workshop in Delhi identified areas for technical and regulatory cooperation.
Public-Private Sector Dialogues: The partnership continues to foster public-private dialogues to inform policy frameworks, scale clean energy technologies, and attract investments. Notable recent investments include Indian company Waaree’s solar module manufacturing facility in Texas.
The ministers emphasized that successful energy transitions require coordinated action at both national and local levels to ensure sustainable clean energy solutions. They commended the U.S.-India partnership for its significant contributions towards common clean energy goals and addressing climate challenges, highlighting its potential to drive innovation and build secure, resilient clean energy supply chains.
