Aizawl, 10th Jan. Union Minister of State for Tribal Affairs, Durgadas Uikey, reiterated the Central government’s dedication to empowering tribal communities, particularly in the Northeast, during his three-day visit to Mizoram.
On Wednesday, Uikey visited Mamit, Mizoram’s lone aspirational district, under the Aspirational District Programme. He inspected various developmental initiatives and interacted with officials and tribal representatives. Highlighting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s focus on uplifting rural and marginalized communities, Uikey urged officials to ensure the effective implementation of schemes aimed at the welfare of tribal populations.
At a meeting in Mamit, Deputy Commissioner K Laltlawmlova presented the district’s progress, citing a literacy rate of 84.93% and significant advancements under the Aspirational District Programme. Mamit ranked fifth among aspirational districts nationwide and secured ₹19 crore in funding from NITI Aayog.
During discussions with tribal representatives, Uikey listened to their concerns about education, healthcare, and infrastructure. Assuring them of continued Central support, he emphasized grassroots participation for sustainable development.
Earlier in Aizawl, Uikey met with Mizoram’s Social Welfare and Tribal Affairs Minister Lalrinpuii and senior officials. He highlighted the government’s inclusive development initiatives and urged Mizoram to leverage schemes designed to uplift tribal communities and achieve equitable growth.
The visit reflects the Centre’s focus on fostering development and improving living standards for tribal populations in the Northeast.
