In a major security crackdown, Guwahati police have arrested two cadres of the separatist outfit Kanglei Yaol Kanna Lup (KCP) – People’s War Group, which is an active faction in the north-eastern state of Manipur. The two were arrested in a combined operation by the police, a major breakthrough in the battle against insurgent activities in the state.

The two suspects were arrested on March 21, 2025, after a tip-off that resulted in their identification and capture. The authorities said the men had been working in Guwahati for a while using fake identities, which was a big achievement in neutralizing threats likely to be posed by the group outside their dens in Manipur.
The KCP (People’s War Group) is one such group among numerous others that has been operating within the region with an agenda for Manipur’s secession from India and making it an independent state. Groups such as these have been popularly linked to acts of brutal insurgency, extortions, and other underground activities to weaken the state and propagate their principles of separatism.
The arrested men, whose names the police have not yet revealed, are suspected of recruiting new members for the outfit and running its operations outside Manipur. Their arrest is likely to have major implications, not just by putting a brake on the group’s activities in Guwahati but also by yielding useful information that could lead security forces to break up other units of the KCP network.
Guwahati police department sources confirmed that a huge amount of documents, maps, and communications material were recovered during the operation, which could shed more light on the activities and operational tactics of the group. Security forces are also probing the duo’s potential role in plotting attacks or disseminating extremist propaganda in Assam and other northeastern states.
The arrest is a pointer to the continuous troubles faced by law enforcement authorities in the northeast, where separatist and insurgent organizations remain active even after years of counter-insurgency efforts. Manipur has been a particular hotspot for such activities, with organizations such as KCP, United National Liberation Front (UNLF), and others fighting for the state’s independence, even using violence to pursue their agendas.
The police operation has been lauded by political leaders and the people as well for its speedy implementation. The Chief Minister of Assam has thanked the police for their efforts, praising them for their alertness in locating insurgents and maintaining peace in the state.
This concern is a reminder of the necessity for continued strong security measures and inter-state cooperation to avoid giving room for insurgent movements. The arrests are not just a warning but also a wake-up call to continue being cautious with increasing security threats in the northeast region.
The two suspects are already in police custody and will be produced before the court for further proceedings. Officials have also hinted that additional arrests are on the cards as investigations proceed into the larger network of separatist operations connected to the KCP (People’s War Group).
