Botad, 1st Oct. Two individuals were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly attempting to derail a passenger train by placing an iron rail piece on the tracks in Botad district, Gujarat, police officials said.
The accused, identified as Ramesh Salia and Jayesh Bavalia, reportedly placed a four to five-foot iron rail piece on the track near Kundli village on September 25. The duo intended to derail the Okha-Bhavnagar passenger train and rob passengers due to financial struggles, according to the police.
Authorities revealed that the accused had watched YouTube tutorials on how to derail trains before executing their plan. However, the train’s engine managed to stop after hitting the rail, thwarting the attempt. The suspects, who had been hiding in a nearby cotton field, fled the scene when the derailment failed.
Given the gravity of the crime, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) were brought in to assist local law enforcement in the investigation. Utilizing technical surveillance and human intelligence, police tracked down the suspects, who had gone into hiding, and arrested them.
The men have been charged under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), the Railways Act, and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act. The incident follows a similar case in Surat, where three railway employees were arrested for tampering with tracks in a suspected attempt to claim credit for averting a sabotage.
