Mike Waltz, the National Security Advisor pick for US President-elect Donald Trump, has underscored India’s importance as a “critical partner” in the US’s future strategic landscape. Speaking at a recent event organized by the United States Institute of Peace (USIP), titled “Passing the Baton 2025: Securing America’s Future in an Era of Strategic Competition,” Waltz laid out the priorities of the incoming administration, focusing on strengthening international alliances and addressing key national security challenges.
Waltz, a former Republican chair of the US-India caucus, stressed that India’s role in US strategy is vital, particularly as both nations seek to bolster security, economic interests, and regional stability. “I think all of those things will continue and then if I didn’t mention India, I will again as a critical partnership in the future,” Waltz noted, adding that the Biden administration’s efforts to promote trilateral dialogues—such as those with South Korea, Japan, and the Philippines—had been crucial in reinforcing a free and open Indo-Pacific.
He also highlighted the need for a bipartisan policy approach to China, especially in areas such as supply chain security and Taiwan. Waltz emphasized that it was essential to secure critical industries and safeguard key alliances, including through continued collaboration with the Quad and AUKUS, both of which focus on enhancing Indo-Pacific security.
When asked about addressing Chinese influence in the Western Hemisphere, Waltz pledged to take firm action. He also discussed the need for bolstered national security efforts at home, including securing the US-Mexico border and combatting ISIS terrorism.
Additionally, Waltz reaffirmed the US’s focus on reducing dependency on China for critical minerals and pharmaceuticals, citing his past work on advancing policies that address these vulnerabilities. His remarks also touched on the role of the US market in navigating relations with the Chinese Communist Party, which he believes could reduce the likelihood of direct conflict between the two powers.
Jake Sullivan, US National Security Advisor, who also participated in the event, reflected on his recent trip to India and the close relationship between the US and India. He joked about the warm reception Waltz would receive from Indian officials, recalling their enthusiasm for his role in the India caucus.
