U.S. President-elect Donald Trump criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin for failing to “protect” Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Calling for a ceasefire, he warned that if it keeps going, it can turn into something “much bigger” and “far worse.” Assad fled Damascus on Sunday after rebel forces entered the capital, marking a dramatic end to his over two-decade-long rule.

In a statement on Truth Social, Trump accused Russia of abandoning Syria due to its preoccupation with the ongoing war in Ukraine, where he claimed Russia has suffered approximately 600,000 casualties.
“Assad is gone. He has fled his country. His protector, Russia, Russia, Russia, led by Vladimir Putin, was not interested in protecting him any longer. There was no reason for Russia to be there in the first place,” Trump said.
Turning attention to Ukraine, Trump criticized the toll of the war, claiming Ukraine has lost 400,000 soldiers and suffered significant civilian casualties. Calling for immediate peace negotiations, he warned that the continuation of such conflicts could have dire global consequences.
Trump urged world leaders, including Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, to step up and play active roles in resolving the crisis. “I know Vladimir well. This is his time to act. China can help. The World is waiting!” he concluded.
