India’s batters fought hard, and their fielding and bowling were top-notch as they defeated Sri Lanka by 60 runs in the ongoing Women’s U19 T20 World Cup in Kuala Lumpur. After being asked to bat first, Gongadi Trisha’s crucial 49 helped India post 118 for 9 in 20 overs on a challenging pitch where Sri Lanka’s spinners got plenty of purchase. In reply, India’s bowlers, both spinners and pacers, stepped up alongside some fantastic fielding to restrict Sri Lanka to just 58 for 9 in 20 overs. Trisha was named Player of the Match for her brilliant knock.

Indian skipper Niki Prasad showed confidence in her pacers, Shabnam Shakil and Joshitha VJ, despite the spin-friendly conditions. The pacers executed their plans brilliantly, reducing Sri Lanka to 26 for 5 by the end of the powerplay. Niki then introduced the spin trio of Aayushi Shukla, Vaishnavi Sharma, and Parunika Sisodia, who combined to take four wickets in 12 overs, conceding just 23 runs.

Sri Lanka’s batters Aseni Thalagune and Pramudi Methsara tried to hold the innings together. Aseni faced 30 balls, and Pramudi remained unbeaten on seven off 28, ensuring their team batted the full 20 overs. However, they fell 60 runs short of the target in the end.

Earlier, Sri Lanka skipper Manudi Nanayakkara won the toss and her decision to bowl first seemed spot on when her side took the field. Pramudi’s first over proved game-changing as she bowled a two-wicket maiden, dismissing G Kamalini and Sanika Chalke. For Sanika, it was a disappointing birthday as she was dismissed for a four-ball duck. The rest of Sri Lanka’s spinners, including Chamodi Praboda, Shashini Gimhani, Limansa Thilakarathna, and Aseni, capitalised on the turning track, taking full advantage of the conditions. Seven of India’s nine wickets fell to spin.

Despite the pressure, Trisha remained calm and adapted to the tricky conditions. She played a counter-attacking knock, at a strike rate of 111.36, hitting shots all around the ground. Unfortunately, she missed her half-century by just one run, but Joshitha’s quick 14-run contribution at the death ensured that India reached a defendable total of 118.

With this victory, India finished unbeaten in the group stage and topped Group A. As they head into the ‘Super Six’ stage, this match provided a much-needed challenge, especially for the Indian batters, who were tested by Sri Lanka’s disciplined bowling attack. Despite the hurdles, India showcased a solid performance, with their bowlers delivering yet another match-winning display.

Brief Score: India-W 118/9 in 20 overs (Gongadi Trisha 49 off 44, Pramudi Methsara 2/10 in three overs) defeated Sri Lanka-W 58/9 in 20 overs (Rashmika Sewwandi 15 off 12, Parunika Sisodia 2/7 in four overs) by 60 runs.
