Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge became visibly agitated during a speech in the Rajya Sabha on Monday, after BJP MP Neeraj Shekhar, son of former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar, interrupted him. The altercation occurred as Mr. Kharge addressed the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address, discussing the fall of the rupee against the US dollar. In response to Shekhar’s interruption, Kharge reminded him of his association with his late father, Chandra Shekhar, and admonished the BJP MP with a sharp rebuke, saying, “Tera baap ka bhi main aisa sathi tha. Tu kya baat karta hai? Tujhko lekar ghuma. Chup, chup, chup baith,” (I was your father’s companion. What are you talking about? I took you around. Shut up and sit).

The outburst sparked an uproar in the Upper House, prompting Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar to intervene, calling for both sides to maintain decorum. Mr. Dhankhar requested Mr. Kharge to withdraw his remarks, emphasizing the immense respect for Chandra Shekhar in the country. He said, “Chandra Shekharji happens to be one of the tallest leaders this country has ever seen. The respect for Chandra Shekharji in the country is immeasurable.”

Kharge, explaining his comments, noted that he and the late Prime Minister had been arrested together and shared a bond. He added that the remarks were not intended as an insult, but were part of the context of their long-standing association. The Chairman reiterated the need to maintain respect for Chandra Shekhar and asked Kharge to withdraw his remarks.

In response, Kharge expressed regret, stating that insulting anyone was not his habit. However, he took the opportunity to accuse the BJP of insulting the country’s former Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh. “Someone said he wears a raincoat while bathing, some said he does not talk, some said he cannot run the government. They made such insulting remarks, but he endured them and kept quiet in the country’s interest,” Kharge said.

Neeraj Shekhar, a former Samajwadi Party MP, joined the BJP in 2019. His father, Chandra Shekhar, served as Prime Minister for six months from October 1990 to June 1991, and is remembered as one of the most respected socialist leaders in India’s political history.
