New Delhi, 15th Oct. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) – World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA) 2024 and the 8th edition of the India Mobile Congress at Bharat Mandapam today.
The Prime Minister emphasized India’s transformative role in global telecommunications and outlined the nation’s commitment to digital equity and opportunity.
During his address, PM Modi highlighted the impressive achievements in India’s telecom sector, noting that the country has laid an extensive optical fiber network—eight times the distance between the Earth and the Moon—in just ten years. He stated, “In India, we have made telecom not just a medium of connectivity, but also a medium of equity and opportunity.”
The Prime Minister also discussed the four pillars of Digital India—low-priced devices, extensive digital connectivity, accessible data, and a ‘Digital First’ approach—asserting that these initiatives have yielded significant results. He reaffirmed India’s goal of producing a complete “Made in India” phone, encompassing everything from chips to finished products.
PM Modi called for a global framework for digital technology, stressing the importance of ethical standards and collaboration to ensure that no community is left behind in the ongoing technological revolution. He urged participants to focus on creating secure, inclusive, and adaptable standards to address future challenges.
“This partnership of WTSA and India Mobile Congress sends a great message where local and global combine to benefit the entire world,” he stated, reflecting on India’s mission to connect through both historical trade routes and modern technology.
The WTSA 2024, hosted for the first time in India, aims to set global standards for critical technologies such as 6G, AI, and cybersecurity, bringing together over 3,000 industry leaders and experts from more than 190 countries.
Union Ministers for Communication, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Chandrasekhar Pemmasani, along with various industry leaders, were present at the event. The India Mobile Congress is set to showcase innovations across various sectors, featuring over 400 exhibitors and participation from over 120 countries, solidifying its position as Asia’s largest digital technology forum.
