New Delhi, 1st Oct. Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin made history on October 1, 2024, by becoming the first woman to assume the role of Director General, Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS). With a distinguished career spanning 38 years, Sarin is now responsible for shaping medical policies for the Indian Armed Forces under the Ministry of Defence.
Prior to her appointment, she held key positions, including DG Medical Services (Navy), DG Medical Services (Air), and Director & Commandant of Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune. Sarin, an alumna of AFMC, Pune, was commissioned into the Armed Forces Medical Services in 1985. She holds an MD in Radiodiagnosis and a Diplomate National Board in Radiation Oncology from Tata Memorial Hospital, with specialized training in Gamma Knife Surgery from the University of Pittsburgh.
Sarin’s remarkable service includes roles in all three branches of the Indian Armed Forces: the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Her exemplary contributions to healthcare earned her the prestigious Ati Vishist Seva Medal (2024) and Vishist Seva Medal (2021), alongside numerous commendations from military chiefs.
She is also a member of the Supreme Court’s National Task Force, tasked with ensuring safe working conditions for medical professionals. Throughout her career, Sarin has been a role model for aspiring women in the Armed Forces, embodying the government’s Nari Shakti initiative.
