New Delhi, 14th Oct. The relationship between India and Canada is facing another round of strain, following recent diplomatic escalations. India has summoned the Canadian envoy and decided to recall its High Commissioner from Canada, signaling a new low in bilateral ties. This decision comes after Canada connected India’s envoy to an investigation into the alleged killing of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a case that has already stirred tensions between the two nations. India has firmly rejected Canada’s claims, dismissing them as baseless and irrational.
This isn’t the first time tensions have flared over the Nijjar case. Last year, similar allegations from Canada led to friction. However, this time, India’s response has been particularly stern, indicating a heightened seriousness in addressing what it perceives as baseless accusations. Canada, meanwhile, has yet to provide any concrete evidence to back its claims, despite levelling serious accusations against India’s High Commissioner. In response, India has not hesitated to voice its displeasure.
Recalling the High Commissioner could signify a breakdown in diplomatic relations between the two countries. It is a stark measure, indicating a lack of trust and a deepening divide. On Monday, India also summoned the Canadian Acting High Commissioner, Stewart Wheeler, in a strong message to the Trudeau administration. The Ministry of External Affairs made it clear that the targeting of Indian diplomats and officials without basis is unacceptable.
The official statement further emphasized that Canada’s actions have jeopardized the safety of Indian diplomats amid a charged atmosphere of extremism and violence in Canada. The Indian government expressed a lack of confidence in the current Canadian government’s ability to ensure the safety of its diplomats, prompting the decision to withdraw them.
