JSW Soorma Hockey Club is gaining momentum at a crucial stage of the season, having won both of their matches in Phase 2. Their next match in the Men’s Hero Hockey India League will be against the Vedanta Kalinga Lancers at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela tomorrow. In their previous meeting with the Lancers, Soorma secured a 4-3 win thanks to a goal from Harish Somappa Mutagar.
“The last match against the Lancers was tight, but we’re not changing our approach for this one. We just need to ensure we’re prepared, with the team fit and fresh for the game. Our goal is to be the best version of ourselves every time we play, and we want to be ready for this big match,” said Head Coach Jeroen Baart.
Currently fifth in the points table, Soorma has three wins, two penalty shootout wins, and one penalty shootout loss. Since Phase 2 began, they’ve won both their matches in Pool A, putting them in a strong position to reach the Semi-Final with two games left in the league.
“I’m really proud of our team. We’ve made great progress since we came together in December. Every session, whether on the field, off the field, in meetings, or the gym, the players are working hard and eager to improve. I’m proud of how we’ve evolved and how we continue to build towards being our best,” Jeroen added.

The Lancers are currently sixth in the points table, with Thierry Brinkman standing out as their top scorer, with nine goals in nine matches, leading the goalscoring chart. They still have a slim chance to reach the Semi-Final if they win this match, making it a key game for Soorma.
“Thierry is a high-quality player, with a strong drive that makes him dangerous in the attacking circle. We’ll need to be aware of him, and our defense will definitely focus on him. However, he’s not the only player we need to watch out for – Domene and Antoine Kina are also threats. But like we showed in our first encounter, we have the qualities to match them, and we’ll be ready,” Jeroen said.
“This match is crucial for us. We don’t know exactly what the other results will be leading up to the Final, but a win against the Lancers will put us in a great position to make the playoffs. We just need to stay sharp, focused, and play our best game against them,” he concluded.
