Senapati, Manipur, 25th Sept. A Lord Shiva temple in Manipur’s Senapati district was partially damaged after an arson attack early today.
The temple, Shri Shri Pashupati Nath Mandir, was targeted twice in recent weeks, with the second attack involving a burning log being thrown into the courtyard, as shown in CCTV footage. Local residents and caretakers managed to extinguish the fire before it spread further.
Civil society organizations, including the Naga Peoples’ Organisation (NPO) and Karong-Senapati Town Committee (KSTC), strongly condemned the attack, stating that such incidents aim to disrupt the peaceful coexistence in the multi-ethnic town. The groups urged police to arrest those responsible promptly.
Sources believe the attack could be an attempt to incite communal tensions, particularly in light of the ongoing ethnic conflict between the Meitei community and Kuki tribes, which has plagued Manipur since May 2023. While Senapati has remained largely peaceful, the broader ethnic clashes in the state have claimed over 220 lives and displaced nearly 50,000 people.
Manipur Rajya Sabha MP Maharaja Sanajaoba Leishemba also condemned the attack, calling it an infringement on secularism and urging swift justice for the perpetrators.
Police are investigating the matter but have yet to release a detailed statement. The incident comes amid rising tensions between the Meitei and Kuki communities, with religious sites being targeted by both sides during the ongoing conflict.
