Shillong gears up to host first-ever ISL match

Nestled in the lap of the Khasi Hills in Meghalaya, Shillong is set to witness a new chapter in Indian football. Known for its passionate football culture, the capital city of Meghalaya will host its first-ever Indian Super League game. NorthEast United FC will play their last three home matches at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, starting with a clash against Mumbai City FC on Friday.

As part of their strategic expansion, NorthEast United, a club founded to represent all eight states of Northeast India, have taken a significant step by bringing ISL football to Shillong. Their aim is to promote the sport across the region, with Shillong being the first venue where they will play as official hosts.

“We are a football club that embodies the entire Northeast region, not just one city or state,” NorthEast United CEO Mandar Tamhane stated. “Transitioning ISL games to Shillong aligns with our broader mission of promoting football development in the North-East.”

The last time the Highlanders played at this venue was the semi-final of the previous Durand Cup, where the stands were packed and fan parks were buzzing with energy.

“The overwhelming response from fans during the Durand Cup was astonishing,” Tamhane remarked. “Whether it was during other matches or NEUFC’s semi-final, the stadium was full and the fan parks were electrifying.”

This time, Meghalaya Football Association’s honorary secretary, Sunesh M. Syiem, expects a similar turnout for NorthEast United’s home games.

“Shillong is a football-loving city, so we expect a huge crowd for the game. I have been informed that some seating sections are already sold out. Additionally, many fans are likely to buy tickets from the stadium on matchdays, so we are expecting a strong turnout,” Sunesh stated.

However, he believes the atmosphere may not match the intensity of the game where Shillong Lajong faced East Bengal in the Durand Cup quarter-finals. According to the MFA secretary, the craze for teams like East Bengal and Bengaluru FC is significantly higher. Hence, the upcoming match against Bengaluru FC, featuring Sunil Chhetri, could generate even greater excitement.

“Last time when East Bengal played here in the Durand Cup, the atmosphere was remarkable. Against Mumbai, I don’t think the excitement will be as high as it will be for the game against Bengaluru FC, where fans will get to witness Sunil Chhetri. That match will be a spectacle,” he added.

All eyes will also be on local talent Redeem Tlang, who began his professional career at Shillong Lajong FC.

“I feel there will be more excitement for local boy Redeem Tlang. Young sensation Parthib Gogoi will draw attention as well. Also, there will be a lot of interest in Mumbai City FC captain Lallianzuala Chhangte,” Sunesh noted.

Despite not having achieved significant success at the national level, local club Shillong Lajong FC hold a special place in this region. However, it remains to be seen whether NorthEast United, playing in the glamorous ISL and coming off a Durand Cup victory, can draw the same level of support.

NorthEast United have continued their strong form from the Durand Cup to their ISL campaign. With 29 points from 19 games, they are firmly in the playoff race, playing an exciting brand of football. Featuring talented players like Jithin MS, Gogoi, and foreign stars such as Alaaeddine Ajaraie and Nestor Albiach, the team is making a strong case for itself.

The MFA secretary believes that if NorthEast United can maintain their style of play, they will win over the hearts of local fans.

“If they perform well, they will naturally receive strong support from the people here,” Sunesh concluded.
