Gargi Raut in Sydney
After months of negotiations between the ICC, BCCI and PCB, preparations for the Champions Trophy are finally underway. The iconic Sydney Cricket Ground played host to the trophy ahead of the final Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024. Shane Watson, ICC ambassador, spoke to the media in front of the SCG, addressing key aspects of the Champions Trophy, as well as offering insights into the current form of Indian stars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
Watson was asked about the Champions Trophy being played in a hybrid model and Pakistan fans being deprived of one half of the tournament. He acknowledged the disappointment, noting that it was unfortunate for Pakistan’s cricket-loving fans.
“It’s going to be huge for Pakistan fans to have an opportunity to see world class cricket,” he said. “Being part of it at a much smaller scale was the highlight of my career. Going to Pakistan and seeing just how much love and joy they have for the sport. They’ve been starved of world-class cricket.
“It’s unfortunate things have worked out that way. But everyone loves to see India vs Pakistan. Whenever they come together, it’s a really special time. No cricket fan wants to miss that match, so it’s unfortunate.”

Turning his attention to India, Watson also spoke about the current form of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli and whether their poor runs would continue going into the Champions Trophy.
“I don’t think it’ll really play a part with Virat and Rohit’s impact in ODI cricket,” he said. “One-day cricket really frees them both. Kohli is a master of one-day cricket. He has extraordinary numbers over a long period of time averaging around 57. It’s crazy to think about the control he has over his innings, and we’ll see that again in the Champions Trophy.”
Speaking about the Indian skipper’s struggles specifically, Watson expressed confidence in Rohit’s ability to score big. “Like we saw in the ODI World Cup, when he was at his very best, he was taking on everyone,” said Watson of Rohit. “It’s more difficult to do that in Teat cricket. Rohit Sharma hasn’t been able to find that balance here in Australia. When he goes back to ODIs, he lets loose and that’s when you see the very best of him. I’d be really surprised if he doesn’t do well knowing that he doesn’t have a lot of time left in international cricket.”
