Delhi Capitals (DC) have been one of the most consistent teams in the Women’s Premier League (WPL), finishing as runners-up in both previous editions. This time, fans are hoping that veteran skipper Meg Lanning and her team can finally lift their maiden WPL title.

Ahead of the new season, DC head coach Jonathan Batty and captain Meg Lanning attended a virtual pre-tournament press conference. During the interaction, Lanning spoke about her excitement to open the innings once again with Shafali Verma.
In recent times, Shafali has been dropped from India’s white-ball squads. However, she has been in excellent form in domestic cricket, scoring 527 runs in seven innings in the Senior Women’s One Day Trophy and 414 runs in five innings in the Senior Women’s One Day Challenger Trophy.
“I love batting with Shafali. She often puts on a very entertaining show, and I have the best seat in the house, watching from the other end most of the time. In the practice game a few days ago, she did something very similar. She looks in good touch, enjoying herself, and having fun too, which I think is important. For me, just watching her play with freedom and express herself—when she does that, it plays a really important role for our team. We get on well, and hopefully, this season can continue from where we left off in the first two seasons,” Lanning said.

In the last two WPL seasons, Lanning and Shafali have scored 868 runs in 18 matches at an average of 51.05, including five fifties and three-century partnerships.
Delhi has also brought in several young Indian talents. Speaking about Niki Prasad, the recent Women’s U19 T20 World Cup-winning captain, coach Jonathan Batty said:
“We obviously signed a couple of really high-quality young players, and Niki is probably the biggest name, having won the U19 World Cup recently. She arrived at the camp late but hit the ground running. We’ve tracked her progress over the last 12 months, even 18 months, through our training and scouting camps.
“I remember a camp back in Bangalore where she was impressive at just 17. It’s fascinating to see how young Indian players burst onto the scene. If she gets an opportunity in the tournament, I’m sure she’ll blow us all away and continue her World Cup form. Along with Nandini Kashyap, the highest run-scorer in the Senior Women’s T20 Challenger Trophy with 332 runs in five innings for India E, she has been fantastic in our training camp this week. They’re genuinely putting the senior players under pressure for their spots, which is great to see,” he concluded.
