Mumbai, 26th Sept. A Mumbai court on Thursday found Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut guilty in a 2022 defamation case filed by Medha K. Somaiya, the wife of former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya. The court sentenced Raut to 15 days in jail and imposed a ₹25,000 fine. However, shortly after the ruling, Raut filed an application, and his jail term was suspended for 30 days to allow him time to appeal. He was also granted bail.

Medha Somaiya’s lawyer, Vivekanand Gupta, confirmed the ruling, stating, “Sanjay Raut has been convicted by the Metropolitan Magistrate, Mazgaon, in the defamation case filed by Medha Somaiya under IPC Section 500 and fined ₹25,000 as compensation.”

The case stemmed from Raut’s allegations in 2022, accusing Medha Somaiya of involvement in a ₹100-crore toilet construction scam in Mira Road, Thane, linked to an NGO run by the Somaiya family. Raut defended his claims, stating they were based on official records and backed by ruling Mahayuti alliance leaders.

Following the court’s verdict, Medha Somaiya expressed satisfaction, saying, “I am an ordinary housewife, but I will fight anyone who harms my family. This verdict vindicates our faith in the judiciary.”

The defamation case was filed after Raut failed to provide documentary evidence to support his claims. The court’s ruling comes ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly elections, with the Mahayuti alliance welcoming the verdict while opposition MVA partners condemned it as politically motivated.
