Among these are reports of Hindus being identified by their religious affiliation through ID checks and then targeted by radical elements. Such incidents have raised alarms about the safety of minorities in the country.
What makes these attacks particularly distressing is their indiscriminate nature. The perpetrators reportedly do not consider linguistic identities, such as Tamil, Telugu, or Kannada, nor do they differentiate among social categories like General, SC, ST, or OBC. The only apparent criterion is religious identity, which has led to widespread fear among minority communities.
These events point to a larger issue of rising intolerance fueled by extremist ideologies. While the majority of Bangladeshis advocate for peace and coexistence, the actions of a radicalized minority threaten the social fabric of the nation.
The government has condemned such violence and pledged to ensure the safety of all citizens, regardless of their faith. Civil society and international human rights groups have also urged for stronger measures to protect minorities and uphold the principles of secularism enshrined in the country’s constitution.
