Mumbai, 15th Sept. Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar expressed deep concern over recent criticisms of India’s reservation system, emphasizing that reservations are a fundamental aspect of the Indian Constitution and must be respected.
In a speech at the inauguration of the Samvidhan Mandir at Elphinstone Technical High School & Junior College in Mumbai, Dhankhar slammed those holding constitutional positions who, according to him, have made periodic “anti-India” remarks abroad while undermining reservations.
He stated, “The Constitution is not to be flaunted like a book. It must be read, understood, and respected.”
Dhankhar highlighted the irony of some foreign travels being used to criticize the Constitution and questioned why figures such as Baba Saheb Ambedkar were not initially awarded the Bharat Ratna. He also pointed out the delay in implementing the Mandal Commission’s recommendations, which he attributed to a persistent anti-reservation mindset.
Addressing the historical context, Dhankhar condemned the Emergency period under then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi as a “darkest phase” in Indian democracy, labeling June 25 as “Samvidhan Hatya Diwas” (Constitution Murder Day) to remember the suppression of democratic values.
Dhankhar underscored that reservations are a tool for ensuring social equality and aiding those who form the backbone of society. He urged citizens to reject attempts to diminish the importance of reservations and to defend democratic and constitutional values.
He further called for a balanced approach from all state institutions to avoid becoming focal points of political inflammatory debates, stressing that they should work to nurture democratic values and support the Constitution’s ideals.
