Mohun Bagan Super Giant are just one step away from securing back-to-back ISL League Shields. If they manage to defeat Odisha FC at the Salt Lake Stadium on Sunday, they will establish an unassailable lead at the top of the ISL points table and claim their second consecutive league shield—an unprecedented feat in ISL history.

Compared to last season, the Mariners have been more consistent and dominant, displaying a ruthless streak throughout the campaign, barring two defeats against Bengaluru FC and FC Goa.

Currently leading the table with 49 points from 21 games, Mohun Bagan enjoy a commanding 10-point advantage over second-placed Goa. The Mariners also have the opportunity to make history by reaching 58 points, the highest tally in any national league in Indian football, if they win all their remaining fixtures. While other teams have struggled to regain momentum after setbacks, Mohun Bagan have bounced back almost instantly.

We take a look at their unforgettable season so far and the key factors behind their dominance as they stand on the cusp of history.

A Happy Dressing Room

One of the key factors behind Mohun Bagan’s formidable run has been their squad depth and star power. From world-class foreign recruits like Jamie Maclaren and Jason Cummings to seasoned Indian internationals like Manvir Singh and Subhasish Bose, the squad boasts incredible quality. However, talent alone does not guarantee success—effective man-management plays a crucial role.

Head coach Jose Molina deserves immense credit for fostering a positive dressing room atmosphere. His ability to manage a squad filled with stars and maintain harmony has been a game-changer. A happy, united team is often the foundation of great success, and Molina has mastered this aspect brilliantly at Mohun Bagan.

Record-Breaking Defence

Sir Alex Ferguson famously said, “Attack wins you games, defence wins you titles”, and Mohun Bagan’s defensive solidity under Molina has proven this once again.

The Mariners have kept a remarkable 13 clean sheets—the most in the league this season—and have conceded just 14 goals in 21 matches, highlighting their discipline and organisation at the back. Molina has consistently emphasised the importance of defensive stability in press conferences, and his philosophy has played a crucial role in maintaining team morale throughout matches.

Mohun Bagan’s defenders have also been lethal at the other end of the pitch. With 14 of their 42 goals coming from defenders—an ISL record—they have set a new benchmark for contributions from the backline, surpassing Chennaiyin FC’s previous record of eight goals by defenders in the 2017-18 season.

Subhasish Bose’s Brilliance at Both Ends

Bose has been one of the standout performers for Mohun Bagan this season. His attacking contributions have been outstanding, as he has netted six goals—the highest by a defender in a single ISL campaign.

His aerial prowess has been a nightmare for opponents, winning 52 aerial duels, while his precise positioning has been instrumental in both attack and defence. Beyond his goal-scoring exploits, Bose has excelled defensively, recording a league-high seven interceptions in a single match against Hyderabad FC. He also ranks fourth in tackles won (39) and second in total interceptions (43), making him an indispensable asset for Mohun Bagan.

Squad Depth

One of the biggest strengths of this Mohun Bagan side is their squad depth. Over the past four years, the club has worked tirelessly to build a balanced squad, adding one or two key domestic talents each season to bolster their depth.

While injuries and suspensions have plagued other teams, Mohun Bagan has remained largely unaffected, thanks to their strong bench. They have reliable replacements in every department, both in the foreign and Indian contingents, ensuring that the team does not suffer a dip in performance due to absences.

Vishal Kaith’s Consistency Between the Sticks

With 13 clean sheets to his name this season, Vishal Kaith has firmly established himself as the frontrunner for the Golden Glove award.

Kaith has displayed remarkable resilience, determination, and composure throughout the campaign. His commitment was evident in the away fixture against Chennaiyin FC, where he suffered a chest injury in a collision with Jordan Gill but made a quick recovery to return for the crucial clash against Bengaluru FC. His command between the posts and excellent understanding with his defenders have been pivotal in making Mohun Bagan the most defensively solid team this season.

Jason Cummings: Excellence in a New Role

Greg Stewart has been a driving force behind Mohun Bagan’s attacking play this season. However, his knee injury forced him to miss several games, leaving the team in need of a new creative presence.

Jason Cummings stepped up to fill that void and has been exceptional in his new role. Primarily a centre-forward, the Australian World Cupper has seamlessly adapted to playing as a second striker, excelling in a free role in the crucial area of the opposition half. He has scored 4 goals and provided 5 assists this season.  His ability to link play, create chances, and contribute in the attacking build-up has added a new dimension to Mohun Bagan’s offence.
