Day 2 of the sixth round of the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 mirrored the disappointments of the opening day for some of Indian cricket’s marquee names. Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Rishabh Pant once again failed to make an impression with the bat, leaving fans yearning for the brilliance they are known for. However, Ravindra Jadeja emerged as the standout performer, continuing his sublime form against Delhi.

The seasoned all-rounder showcased his mastery with the ball, claiming his 10th ten-wicket haul in first-class cricket, which included the prized scalp of Pant. His heroics powered Saurashtra to a resounding ten-wicket victory over Delhi. Another notable performance came from Shardul Thakur, who rose to the occasion for Mumbai. With his side in dire straits, Thakur produced a magnificent counter-attacking century, proving instrumental in steering the defending champions out of troubled waters.

After losing Rohit and Jaiswal cheaply once again, followed by skipper Ajinkya Rahane and Shreyas Iyer, the defending champions found themselves in deep trouble. However, Shardul stepped up with a brilliant counter-attacking century, supported by Tanush Kotian’s unbeaten 58*, to pull Mumbai out of the crisis. This marked Shardul’s second First-Class century. Heading into Day 3, Mumbai currently hold a lead of 188 runs with three wickets in hand.

Karnataka vs Punjab

Karnataka posted a mammoth 475, courtesy of a brilliant 203 by Smaran R. His first double hundred came on a pitch where no player from either team, apart from Smaran, has yet to score a fifty. Having lost two quick wickets, Punjab trail by 396 runs. The onus will be on captain Shubman Gill to score big if Punjab are to stay in contention.

Haryana vs Bengal

Resuming on Day 2, Bengal were bundled out for just 125, with Haryana’s Anuj Thakral doing the damage with a six-fer. In their second innings, Haryana started well before losing two wickets within 20 overs. Nishant Sindhu and Himanshu Rana’s third-wicket partnership has taken the lead to 190 runs, which could very well go beyond 300 on Day 3.

Rajasthan vs Vidarbha

On the back of a 78 from Samarpit Joshi and 72 from Mahipal Lomror, Rajasthan posted 265 on Day 2. Harsh Dubey starred for Vidarbha with the ball, claiming a five-fer. In their second innings, Vidarbha have already lost four wickets and trail by 16 runs. It will take a herculean effort to steer Vidarbha into a winning position from here.

Tamil Nadu vs Chandigarh

Despite Shivam Bhambri’s fighting 108, Chandigarh could only manage 204 in response to Tamil Nadu’s first-innings total of 301. Two left-arm spinners, S Ajith Ram and R Sai Kishore, starred for Tamil Nadu, sharing eight wickets between them, with the former claiming a five-fer. Tamil Nadu are two down for 27 in their second innings at stumps on Day 2 and lead by 124 runs.

MP vs Kerala

After a strong start by the openers, Kerala couldn’t capitalise as the batters collapsed, folding for 167 in their first innings. It was a combined effort from the MP bowlers to restrict Kerala’s batting line-up. MP’s star batter Rajat Patidar and skipper Shubham Sharma then stretched their team’s lead to 133 runs. Both batters looked solid and will be aiming for triple-digit scores to put their team in a commanding position.
