New Delhi, 25th Sept. Quick commerce has emerged as a key growth driver in grocery shopping, with 31% of online shoppers now relying on instant delivery platforms, according to a report by NielsenIQ (NIQ). Additionally, 39% of shoppers use quick commerce services for top-up purchases.
The report, based on a survey of 4,500 consumers across major Indian cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Hyderabad, examined the shopping habits of people aged 18-65 who purchase groceries from hypermarkets, supermarkets, traditional trade stores, and online platforms.
Popular Categories for Quick Commerce
Quick commerce is particularly popular for ready-to-eat meals and salty snacks, with 42% and 45% of shoppers, respectively, using these platforms for such items, according to NIQ’s Shopper Trends Report.
Shift Towards Multichannel Shopping
The report highlights the rise of multichannel shopping, where consumers are increasingly engaging with both modern trade and online platforms. Shopping frequency has also increased across these channels. Twenty percent of offline shoppers now turn to online stores for grocery needs, particularly in metropolitan areas where online platforms are commonly used for main grocery shopping.
In non-metro areas, online stores are mainly used for top-up purchases, while urgent needs have driven a noticeable rise in quick commerce visits.
The retail landscape in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector is undergoing a transformation as shoppers embrace both offline and online options. The increasing popularity of quick commerce, especially for urgent purchases, is reshaping how consumers shop for groceries, particularly in metro cities.
As quick commerce continues to grow, its impact on grocery shopping habits reflects the evolving preferences of modern consumers in India.
