‘Quad is Here to Stay’: PM Modi Emphasizes Global Cooperation at Leaders’ Summit

Wilmington, Delaware, 22nd Sept. Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the sixth Quad Leaders’ Summit in Wilmington, Delaware, on September 21, 2024, hosted by U.S. President Joseph R. Biden Jr.

The summit also saw the participation of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

In his address, PM Modi expressed gratitude to President Biden for his commitment to strengthening the Quad as a global force for good. He emphasized the significance of the Quad partnership in a world fraught with tensions, underscoring their shared democratic values and commitment to upholding international order based on the rule of law.

“The Quad is here to stay, to assist, to partner, and to complement the efforts of Indo-Pacific countries,” Modi stated, highlighting their goal of a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific.

The leaders announced several initiatives aimed at addressing the development priorities of the Indo-Pacific and the global community:

  • Quad Cancer Moonshot: A collaboration to combat cervical cancer in the Indo-Pacific region.
  • Maritime Initiative for Training in the Indo-Pacific (MAITRI): To enhance training for Indo-Pacific partners.
  • Quad-at-Sea Ship Observer Mission: A first-ever mission set for 2025 to improve maritime interoperability and safety.
  • Quad Ports of the Future Partnership: To support sustainable port infrastructure in the region.
  • Quad Principles for Digital Public Infrastructure: To guide development and deployment in the region.
  • Semiconductor Supply Chains Contingency Network: To strengthen semiconductor supply chains.
  • Energy Efficiency Efforts: Focused on high-efficiency cooling systems in the Indo-Pacific.
  • Space-Based Web Portal for Mauritius: For monitoring extreme weather and climate impacts.
  • Quad STEM Fellowship Sub-category: For Indo-Pacific students pursuing engineering programs in India.

The leaders welcomed India’s hosting of the next Quad Leaders’ Summit in 2025 and adopted the Quad Wilmington Declaration to advance their collaborative agenda.
