Pune, 5th Oct. A special court in Pune has summoned Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a criminal defamation case filed by Satyaki Savarkar, the grandnephew of Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. The case accuses Gandhi of making objectionable remarks about V.D. Savarkar during a speech in London in March 2023.

The court issued the summons on Friday, asking Gandhi to appear in person on October 23. The complaint, lodged by Satyaki Savarkar last year, was recently transferred to the special court for MPs and MLAs from the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) court. Advocate Sangram Kolhatkar, representing the complainant, confirmed that Gandhi must answer charges under Section 500 of the Indian Penal Code (defamation).

Satyaki Savarkar alleges that Gandhi falsely claimed in his speech that V.D. Savarkar had written about beating up a Muslim man, a statement Savarkar’s grandnephew termed “fictitious, false, and malicious.” Following a police inquiry, the Vishrambaug police station concluded that there was prima facie evidence supporting the complaint.

Gandhi is expected to appear before the court on October 23 to respond to the charges.
