Lilongwe, 19th Oct. President Droupadi Murmu held delegation-level talks with Malawi’s President, Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, at the State House in Lilongwe. The meeting focused on strengthening the India-Malawi partnership, covering a wide array of topics aimed at deepening bilateral ties.
During the visit, President Murmu witnessed the signing of multiple Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) focused on Arts & Culture, Youth Matters, Sports, and Pharmaceutical cooperation. As a gesture of support, India provided 1,000 metric tonnes of rice as humanitarian assistance to Malawi and handed over the Bhabhatron cancer treatment machine. Additionally, President Murmu announced India’s commitment to establishing a permanent Artificial Limb Fitment Centre, also known as the Jaipur Foot, in Malawi.
Earlier in the day, the President paid tribute at the National War Memorial in Lilongwe, honoring soldiers and civilians who lost their lives during the World Wars and other military operations. She also laid a wreath at the Kamuzu Mausoleum, the final resting place of Malawi’s first President, Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda.
On October 17, President Murmu addressed the Indian community at a reception hosted by the High Commissioner of India in Malawi. She highlighted India’s strong ties with Africa, emphasizing cooperation rooted in mutual trust, equality, and benefit. She underscored India’s role in advocating for Africa’s permanent membership in the G20 and reaffirmed India’s commitment to sharing knowledge and experiences with countries in the Global South. The President encouraged the Indian diaspora to contribute to India’s development journey.
On October 19, the President is scheduled to perform Arati and Puja at Shree Radha Krishna Mandir in Lilongwe, followed by a visit to Lake Malawi before concluding her three-nation state tour of Algeria, Mauritania, and Malawi, and returning to New Delhi.
