Port Blair, 14th Sept. The Centre has decided to rename the capital of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Port Blair, as Sri Vijaya Puram, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on Friday. This change is intended to symbolize the victory achieved in the Indian freedom struggle.
In a statement on X, Shah explained, “Inspired by the vision of PM @narendramodi Ji, to free the nation from the colonial imprints, today we have decided to rename Port Blair as Sri Vijaya Puram. While the earlier name had a colonial legacy, Sri Vijaya Puram symbolizes the victory achieved in our freedom struggle and the A&N Islands’ unique role in the same.”
He emphasized the historical significance of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, noting their role in the freedom struggle and their strategic importance for India’s future.
Shah highlighted that the islands hosted the first unfurling of the Indian flag by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and were home to the cellular jail where Veer Savarkar and other freedom fighters endured hardship.
Earlier in January 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi renamed 21 unnamed islands in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands after Param Vir Chakra awardees.
Located on the east coast of South Andaman Island, Sri Vijaya Puram (formerly Port Blair) serves as the gateway to over 500 pristine islands. The city is a commercial hub and houses government establishments, offering tourists water-based activities such as snorkeling, scuba diving, and sea cruises.
