Guwahati- In a spectacular showcase of Assam’s rich tea garden culture, the traditional Jhumoir dance will be performed in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday. The grand event will feature over 8,500 dancers and will be broadcast live across 800 tea estates, ensuring widespread participation and viewership.

A high-profile delegation of over 60 foreign diplomats, led by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, will also witness the vibrant performance. To extend the experience to a larger audience, the dance will be streamed on television screens and LED displays set up across the tea gardens, allowing workers and their families to partake in the celebration remotely.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reaffirmed the deep cultural significance of Jhumoir, countering recent claims questioning its authenticity. “Jhumoir is an integral part of Assamese culture and resonates strongly with the sentiments of the tea tribe community,” he said. Sarma also announced plans to present Jhumoir on an international platform, with upcoming performances scheduled in Delhi.
Ahead of the main event, a full-dress rehearsal was conducted on Sunday at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, attended by Sarma and several cabinet ministers who encouraged the performers. While the rehearsal was open to the public, Monday’s performance will be restricted to invitees with government-issued passes due to security measures. The dancers, who have been undergoing rigorous training under professional guidance since Friday, are expected to deliver a flawless performance.
Jhumoir is a traditional folk dance primarily performed by the tea tribe community of Assam and neighboring states like West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Odisha. Deeply rooted in the lives of tea garden workers, it is performed during festivities, harvest celebrations, and social gatherings. The dance is characterized by graceful, synchronized movements accompanied by rhythmic beats of the Madol (a traditional drum) and melodious folk songs that narrate tales of love, labor, and life in the tea gardens.
The performance at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium marks a significant cultural milestone, aiming to bring national and global recognition to Jhumoir. Assam had previously made history at the same venue in 2023 with a record-breaking Bihu dance performance featuring over 12,000 dancers. Now, the Jhumoir performance seeks to make a similar impact, further cementing Assam’s cultural heritage on the world stage.
