Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday morning took a ‘holy dip’ at the Sangam in Prayagraj, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers, as part of the ongoing Maha Kumbh celebrations. Dressed in a saffron jacket, blue trackpants, and holding rudraksha beads, the Prime Minister was seen chanting prayers while taking several full-body dips in the river’s sacred waters.

Earlier, PM Modi also took a boat tour of the Sangam with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, witnessing the massive gathering of devotees from around the world. Despite the tragedy that struck the Kumbh last week with a fatal stampede that claimed 30 lives, the atmosphere was filled with devotion, as millions took part in the auspicious ritual.

In a statement on social media, PM Modi described the holy dip as a “moment of divine connection” and shared his feelings of devotion. He posted, “The ‘snan’ at the Sangam is a moment of divine connection. May Maa Ganga bless all with peace, wisdom, good health, and harmony.” The visuals from the site showed a large crowd of people, eager to catch a glimpse of the Prime Minister as he performed the rituals.

PM Modi’s visit comes amid crucial Assembly elections in Delhi, where his party, the BJP, faces a strong challenge from the ruling AAP. Before heading to Prayagraj, the Prime Minister had urged Delhi voters to actively participate in the electoral process, calling it a “festival of democracy.”

The Prime Minister’s visit follows the earlier pilgrimage of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and his family, who also took a dip in the river before the tragic stampede. Additionally, PM Modi’s visit coincides with the significant infrastructural investments made in Prayagraj, with over Rs 5,500 crore allocated for the development of roads, sanitation, and security in preparation for the Kumbh.

Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuk also visited Prayagraj for the Kumbh, engaging in spiritual activities and exploring the Digital Mahakumbh Experience Centre, accompanied by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
