At the 4th Global Renewable Energy Investor’s Meet (RE-INVEST) 2024 in Gandhinagar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid out an ambitious roadmap for India’s future, with a focus on sustainable energy sources.
PM Modi announced that India is setting the stage for a thousand-year transition to clean energy, harnessing solar, wind, nuclear, and hydropower as its pillars. The Prime Minister stressed that this is not just about meeting energy needs, but ensuring India’s place as a leader in the global green energy landscape.
“Our aim is not to reach the top but to remain on top. Today, not only Indians but the entire world feels that India is the best bet of the 21st century,” PM Modi said. The Prime Minister’s remarks come on the heels of major global events in India, such as the Global Fintech Fest and the Global Semiconductor Summit, which attracted participation from across the world. The focus now, he said, is on the future of green energy.
The Prime Minister highlighted that India’s path to energy security will be paved by clean and sustainable alternatives. “Solar, wind, nuclear, and hydropower are the answers to our energy future,” Modi told the gathering of global investors and industry leaders.
Major Green Energy Projects
PM Modi used the platform to highlight the rapid pace of green energy developments during the first 100 days of his third term in office. Among the key announcements was the introduction of the Offshore Green Energy Policy, part of the Vibrant Gas Funding Scheme, with over Rs 7,000 crore set aside for investment.
Additionally, the Prime Minister revealed plans to generate 31,000 megawatts of hydropower, backed by an expenditure of more than Rs 12,000 crore.
India’s ambitious target to install 500 gigawatts of renewable energy by 2030 was also reaffirmed. The Prime Minister expressed confidence in the country’s leadership position among G20 nations when it comes to green energy, pointing out that India is transforming into a global example of sustainable development.
Long-Term Climate Commitments
India’s journey towards a green future was formalized during the COP26 summit in Glasgow in 2021. PM Modi reiterated that the country is committed to meeting 50% of its energy needs from renewable sources by 2030, achieving 500 gigawatts of non-fossil fuel capacity, and working towards net-zero emissions by 2070.
