Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on his first official visit to Sri Lanka in his third term, received a ceremonial guard of honour on Saturday, setting the stage for a significant diplomatic engagement. His visit resulted in the signing of multiple agreements across key sectors, reinforcing India’s commitment to deepening its partnership with its southern neighbour.

A major highlight of the visit was the signing of key defence agreements, marking a shift in India-Sri Lanka military cooperation. The agreements pave the way for increased joint maritime surveillance, military training programs, and the provision of strategic equipment, strengthening regional security ties.
Addressing one of the most pressing concerns between the two nations, PM Modi announced a breakthrough in resolving the long-standing issue of Indian fishermen detained by Sri Lankan authorities. As a result of high-level discussions, Sri Lanka has agreed to the immediate release of all Indian fishermen currently in custody, along with a commitment to promptly return seized boats.
In the digital sector, India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has entered into a partnership with Sri Lanka’s Digital Economy Ministry. This collaboration aims to share India’s successful digital governance models, helping Sri Lanka implement large-scale digital solutions to drive economic transformation.
In a significant push toward energy security, India’s National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) has partnered with Sri Lanka’s Ceylon Electricity Board to develop a 120-megawatt solar power plant in Trincomalee. The project aims to support Sri Lanka’s energy transition, reduce its reliance on fossil fuels, and provide a sustainable solution to its growing electricity demand.
Reaffirming India’s support in Sri Lanka’s post-crisis recovery, PM Modi announced further economic aid. Following India’s $4 billion assistance during Sri Lanka’s 2022 financial meltdown, New Delhi is now facilitating debt restructuring and lowering interest rates on outstanding loans. Further financial aid of approximately 2.4 billion Lankan Rupees has also been pledged for the development of Sri Lanka’s eastern provinces, reflecting India’s continued investment in regional growth.
