New Delhi, 28th Sept. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed profound grief over the passing of Padma Shri awardee and renowned organic farmer, Pappammal, who breathed her last at the age of 109 in Coimbatore. She had been suffering from age-related health issues.
In a message, the Prime Minister praised her significant contributions to agriculture, particularly in organic farming, noting that she was widely admired for her humility and kindness. Taking to social media platform X, Modi posted:
“Deeply pained by the passing away of Pappammal Ji. She made a mark in agriculture, especially organic farming. People admired her for her humility and kind nature. My thoughts are with her family and well-wishers. Om Shanti.”
Pappammal was a celebrated figure in Indian agriculture, known for her pioneering work in organic farming. In March 2023, despite her advanced age, she traveled to New Delhi to attend the Global Millets Conference, where she met PM Modi. During the meeting, she highlighted the importance of promoting millet cultivation and consumption as a means to support sustainable agriculture and encourage healthy eating habits.
Her passing is deeply mourned by the agricultural community and her many admirers.
