Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Brazil on Monday for the second leg of his three-nation tour, where he will participate in the G20 Summit. His arrival in Brazil follows a “productive” visit to Nigeria, where he engaged in bilateral talks with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and interacted with the Indian community.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced PM Modi’s arrival in Brazil via a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi lands in the vibrant city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to attend the G20 Brazil Summit.” The post also included images of his welcome at the airport.
PM Modi shared his own update on X, saying, “Landed in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to take part in the G20 Summit. I look forward to the summit discussions and fruitful exchanges with world leaders.” As a member of the G20 Troika, alongside Brazil and South Africa, India will play a key role at the 19th G20 Summit on November 18-19.
In addition to PM Modi, leaders such as Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden will also attend the summit in Rio de Janeiro.
After the summit, PM Modi will travel to Guyana from November 19 to 21 at the invitation of President Mohamed Irfaan Ali, marking the first visit by an Indian prime minister to the country in more than 50 years.
Ahead of his departure, PM Modi remarked, “This year, Brazil has built upon India’s legacy. I look forward to meaningful discussions in line with our vision of ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future.’ I will also take the opportunity to discuss furthering bilateral ties with other leaders.” Last year, India’s G20 presidency saw major achievements, including the inclusion of the African Union as a permanent member and the successful resolution of divisions over the Ukraine conflict in the leaders’ declaration.
During his visit to Nigeria, PM Modi was honored with the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), becoming only the second foreign dignitary to receive this award, after Queen Elizabeth II. This recognition marked his 17th international award.
PM Modi’s trip to Nigeria was the first by an Indian prime minister in 17 years.
