New Delhi, 14th Sept. A day after eight people from Vasna Sogthi village in Gujarat drowned during the immersion of Ganesha idols in the Meshwo River, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased.

The announcement, made on Saturday, September 14, through the Prime Minister’s Office, also stated that ₹50,000 would be provided to those injured in the incident.

The Prime Minister expressed his sorrow, saying, “Deeply saddened by the news of the loss of life in the drowning incident in Dehgam taluka of Gujarat. My condolences to all the families who have lost their loved ones in the tragedy.”

He also prayed for peace for the departed souls.

Sub Divisional Magistrate BB Modiya, who supervised the search and rescue operations, explained that the villagers were likely unaware of the river’s rising water level due to an under-construction check dam nearby, which may have contributed to the tragedy.

After the rescue efforts, eight bodies were recovered from the river, and one person initially thought to be missing was later found safe in the village.
