Patna: Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for projects worth over ₹800 crore in Patna, Bihar, today. The projects, spanning multiple sectors, include cooperative development, police infrastructure, road transport, and urban water supply. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai were also present at the event.
Addressing the gathering, Shah criticized previous opposition governments for allegedly ruining Bihar’s cooperative sector and fostering an era of crime and corruption between 1990 and 2005, which he termed “Jungle Raj.” He contrasted this with the Modi government’s developmental push, highlighting that Bihar has received ₹9.23 lakh crore in central allocations over the past decade—over three times the ₹2.8 lakh crore received between 2004 and 2014.
Shah announced plans to revive all 30 closed sugar mills in Bihar, underscoring the cooperative sector’s potential to transform the state’s economy. He pointed out that Bihar once accounted for over 30% of India’s sugar production, a figure that plummeted under opposition rule. The Modi government, he said, is committed to revitalizing this sector, along with boosting maize farming through a ₹1,000 crore investment in a Maize Research Centre.
Highlighting Bihar’s role in agricultural production, Shah noted that the state leads in litchi, mushroom, and makhana production, ranks second in maize output, and is a top producer of lentils, sugarcane, wheat, and rice. He also announced the establishment of a Makhana Board and reiterated the government’s commitment to purchasing crops at the Minimum Support Price (MSP).
On the infrastructure front, Shah said Bihar has received projects worth ₹4 lakh crore for roads and bridges, ₹1 lakh crore for railways, and ₹2,000 crore for airport development. The first farmer’s train from Bihar and the construction of seven major bridges worth ₹8,000 crore are also part of the state’s transformation, he added.
Slamming the opposition, Shah accused previous governments of fostering an industry of “murder, kidnapping, extortion, and looting,” and said the fodder scam tarnished Bihar’s image globally. He asserted that Bihar has now moved beyond that dark era, with the Modi government focusing on governance, infrastructure, and cooperative sector revival.
Shah’s announcements included laying the foundation stone for a ₹83.16 crore food storage project under the world’s largest food storage scheme and ₹181.14 crore for 133 new police buildings. Additionally, three road projects worth ₹109.16 crore, a ₹27.29 crore cooperative training hostel, and multiple drinking water supply schemes under the AMRUT-1 project were inaugurated.
With Bihar heading toward elections, Shah’s visit and his sharp critique of the opposition signal the BJP’s aggressive push to consolidate its position in the state.
