Bhubaneswar, 20th Sept. The Odisha State Commission for Women (SCW) has launched an investigation into the alleged sexual assault of the fiancée of an army officer at the Bharatpur police station. Taking suo-motu cognisance of the incident, SCW Chairperson Minati Behera visited the station on Friday to gather information and documents related to the case.
Behera, speaking to reporters after her visit, confirmed that the commission had begun an inquiry. “We have taken up the case suo-motu and have started our investigation. As the crime branch is now handling the case, they took the majority of the documents, but we have collected what was available at the Bharatpur police station,” she said.
The SCW Chairperson plans to visit the victim’s home for further inquiry and will meet with the crime branch to obtain necessary documents and discuss the case with investigating officials. A committee will be formed to carry out a detailed investigation, and the final report will be submitted to the government, along with recommendations. Behera also stated that discussions will be held with the Director General of Police (DGP) regarding the incident.
The National Commission for Women has also taken suo-motu cognisance of the case and has requested an action-taken report from the Odisha DGP.
The case stems from an incident last Sunday, when an army officer stationed in West Bengal and his fiancée approached Bharatpur police station to lodge a complaint following an alleged road rage incident involving local youths. A quarrel reportedly ensued between the couple and the police personnel over the registration of an FIR. The woman was later arrested for allegedly misbehaving with police officers and claimed she was sexually assaulted while in custody. She was released on bail on Thursday, as granted by the high court.
The investigation by both state and national women’s commissions is ongoing.
