Bhubaneswar, 23rd Sept. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has ordered a judicial inquiry into the alleged torture of an Army officer and the sexual assault of his fiancée at a police station in Bhubaneswar. The state government has vowed to take strict action against any individuals or officials found guilty.

The decision for a judicial inquiry was taken after discussions with Deputy Chief Ministers K V Singh Deo and Pravati Parida, Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari, Law Minister Pritihiviraj Harichandan, and senior officials. The inquiry will be led by Justice Chittaranjan Das, with a report expected within 60 days.

In addition, the state government has requested the Orissa High Court to supervise the investigation being conducted by the Crime Branch of the Odisha Police.

The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) released a statement affirming the government’s respect for the Indian Army and commitment to the safety, dignity, and rights of women. The statement also mentioned the suspension of five police officers from the Bharatpur police station, where the alleged incident took place, and the registration of a case against them.

The incident, which occurred on September 15, involved an Army officer and his fiancée, who had approached the police station to file a complaint regarding road rage. However, a verbal altercation escalated, leading to the alleged assault of both the officer and his fiancée by police personnel.

Opposition leader Naveen Patnaik, president of the BJD, has demanded a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe, monitored by the court, and has called for a Bhubaneswar bandh on September 24.

The youths accused of harassing the Army officer and his fiancée have been arrested and presented in court. The state government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring justice in the matter.
