New Delhi, 12th Delhi. National Security Advisor Ajit Doval held comprehensive talks with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Shoigu, in St. Petersburg on Wednesday. The meeting took place on the sidelines of a BRICS national security advisors’ conclave, with discussions covering key issues of mutual interest, including India’s potential role in mediating a resolution to the ongoing Ukraine conflict.

The Indian Embassy in Russia confirmed that both sides reviewed progress in bilateral cooperation and addressed crucial topics, following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv on August 23. Modi had emphasized the need for Russia and Ukraine to engage in dialogue and expressed India’s readiness to play an “active role” in restoring peace.
Doval’s visit to Russia comes just over two weeks after Modi’s high-profile trip to Kyiv, marking the first by an Indian Prime Minister since Ukraine’s independence in 1991. Modi had called for both Russia and Ukraine to come together swiftly to end the war, reaffirming India’s longstanding stance for a peaceful resolution through dialogue and diplomacy.
In recent days, there have been growing international calls for India to mediate in the conflict, given New Delhi’s strong ties with both Russia and Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin, during the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, named India, Brazil, and China as potential intermediaries, expressing confidence in their ability to assist in resolving the war.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also suggested that India and China could contribute to the peace process during her talks with Zelenskyy. India has consistently maintained that dialogue and diplomacy are essential for resolving the Ukraine crisis.
