New Delhi, 28th Sept. The Consulate General of India in New York has clarified that there have been no changes to the Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) rules, dispelling recent reports that suggested otherwise.
In a statement posted on X, the consulate emphasized, “We have come across news reports spreading false information that restrictions have been placed on OCI card holders in the recent past. Friends in the Indian American community are hereby informed that no new change has been introduced in the recent past for OCI card holders.”

The statement referred to the Gazette Notification dated March 4, 2021, which continues to govern the rights of OCI cardholders, ensuring that existing provisions remain in force. The clarification comes amid growing concerns among the global Indian community, which numbers around 32 million, regarding the potential loss of privileges associated with OCI status.
In response to these worries, the @IndiainNewYork account linked to a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page to further reassure the community that the rules have not changed. The consulate also highlighted and shared the relevant Gazette notification to provide additional clarity on the matter.
