Madurai, 6th Feb. Nine individuals reportedly fell ill after consuming grilled chicken at a restaurant located at Chinnakadai Street, Sholavandan in Madurai on the night of February 4. The affected individuals experienced symptoms including mild diarrhoea, prompting complaints that led to an investigation by officials from the Food Safety Department and local police.
The authorities initially penalized the restaurant for violations concerning hygiene standards. According to the Deputy Director of Health Services, out of the nine individuals, four were admitted to the Sholavandan Government Hospital, while the remaining five, who experienced milder symptoms, were taken to the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) in Madurai. Two patients were discharged after treatment at Sholavandan Hospital, while the others continue to receive care.
The incident comes amidst growing concerns over food safety, with G Kamala Vardhana Rao, CEO of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), recently emphasizing the need for increased inspections of high-risk food establishments in Tamil Nadu. Rao also highlighted the ongoing development of Healthy and Hygienic Food Streets in various locations and stressed the importance of expediting the initiative to ensure public access to safe food options.
Additionally, Rao visited the Southern Regional Office of FSSAI in Chennai, where he discussed the functioning of the National Food Laboratory and various divisions within the regional office. He also addressed issues related to Food Import Clearance, particularly the new Food Import Rejection Alert (FIRA) portal, which provides updates on food import rejections to stakeholders in the food industry.
