Panchkula, 17th Oct. Nayab Singh Saini is set to be sworn in as the Chief Minister of Haryana at a ceremony in Panchkula on Thursday, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, key BJP figures, and NDA partners. Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya will administer the oath of office and secrecy to Saini, marking his second term as Chief Minister.
The ceremony will also likely include the swearing-in of ministers in Saini’s cabinet. As per regulations, the Haryana government can include up to 14 ministers, including the Chief Minister.
In the recent state assembly polls held on October 5, the BJP achieved a historic third consecutive term, securing 48 out of 90 seats. The Congress, its main rival, won 37 seats. Saini, 54, was unanimously chosen as the leader of the BJP legislature party in a meeting at the party’s Panchkula office on Wednesday.
Notably, in a departure from tradition, the BJP had declared before the polls that Saini would retain the Chief Ministerial position if the party succeeded in the elections. Saini, an influential OBC leader, succeeded Manohar Lal Khattar as Chief Minister in March, taking over when the party faced significant challenges, including anti-incumbency sentiments, opposition criticism on farmers’ issues, unemployment, the Agnipath scheme, inflation, and law and order concerns.
Saini won the Ladwa assembly seat in Kurukshetra district by a margin of 16,054 votes. His elevation from Haryana BJP president to Chief Minister earlier this year came at a crucial time for the party, which ultimately paid off as he led the BJP to victory, defying exit poll predictions favoring a Congress sweep.
Extensive security measures have been put in place for the swearing-in ceremony, which is expected to draw prominent political leaders and supporters.
