New Delhi, 6th Oct. The National Library Advisory Board has commended the Union Cabinet’s decision to confer classical language status on Bengali, Assamese, Marathi, Pali, and Prakrit. The decision was made during an October 3 meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, coinciding with the Durga Puja festival.

National Library Director General Ajoy Pratap Singh expressed gratitude, particularly for the recognition of Bengali during the auspicious Devipaksha, which marks the arrival of Maa Durga. Singh emphasized the significance of this announcement for Bengal and Bengalis worldwide, aligning with the pride and celebration of Durga Puja.

He also highlighted the library’s ongoing efforts to preserve books and periodicals in 22 Indian languages, including Bengali, with an inauguration of a new division planned in one and a half months. This division will focus on archiving, translating, and digitizing texts from these languages.

The government noted that the new status for these languages will create job opportunities in academic research, translation, and digital media.
