Nagpur Violence: Maharashtra Minority Body Chief Blames Outsiders, Calls for Peace
Nagpur- Maharashtra Minority Commission Chairman Pyare Khan has condemned the recent violence in Nagpur’s Mahal area, describing it as “very unfortunate.” He urged people to maintain peace and claimed that the unrest was caused by outsiders, not locals, in a city renowned for its communal harmony.

“This is a very unfortunate incident, and such violence should not have happened in Nagpur, a place known for its saints. During Ram Navami, Muslims here set up tents to welcome Hindus. There is a Dargah where people from all religions — Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, and Christians — come to pray,” Khan said.

Khan alleged that anti-social elements from outside the city incited the violence. “The people involved in this violence are not from Nagpur. Some anti-social elements came from outside and created unrest,” he claimed, urging residents to reject violence and maintain peace.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Pawan Khera blamed the BJP-led government for failing to prevent the violence, questioning how such unrest occurred in a city with a 300-year history of communal harmony. “A riot broke out in Mahal, the hometown of Maharashtra’s Chief Minister. Nagpur has a 300-year-old history, and no riot has ever happened here before. We should ask why such a situation has arisen,” Khera said.

He pointed fingers at the BJP’s handling of the situation, alleging that some political parties deliberately stoked tensions for their benefit. “If the VHP and Bajrang Dal organised a protest demanding the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb, did the government make no arrangements to maintain law and order?” Khera questioned.

Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule also appealed for calm, urging residents not to believe in rumours and to cooperate with the police. “The priority is to restore peace in society and prevent the spread of rumours. An investigation will later reveal why the unrest occurred,” Bawankule said. He stressed the need for political unity to maintain peace.

Following the violence, Nagpur Police issued prohibitory orders in parts of the city and detained over 20 individuals. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage and other evidence to identify those responsible, with an FIR in process. The police have urged residents to stay calm and support efforts to restore order.
