Kohima, 11th Sept. The Nagaland government has opted not to grant permission for the ‘Gau Mahasabha’ (mega meeting for cows) scheduled to take place in Kohima on September 28.

The meeting was set to be presided over by Swami Avimukteshvaranand Saraswati, Shankaracharya of Jyotirmath.

The decision was made during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, as confirmed by government spokesperson and minister C L John.

The Cabinet’s decision reflects the protection afforded under Article 371A of the Constitution, which safeguards the religious and social practices of the Naga people, as well as Naga customary laws.

John reported that the Cabinet considered the opposition voiced by various civil society organizations and political parties within the state.

Key objections came from the ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), its allies the BJP, and the Naga Peoples’ Front (NPF), alongside civil society groups such as the Naga Mothers’ Association and the Naga Students’ Federation.

The minister emphasized that the decision was made to maintain public order, and advised the organizers against proceeding with the event in Nagaland.

The Naga Mothers’ Association highlighted that beef has been a traditional part of Naga cuisine for generations.

In support, the state BJP also condemned the proposed event, with state BJP president Benjamin Yepthomi asserting that the matter should be addressed with sensitivity to Nagaland’s socio-religious and cultural context.
