Kohima- The Nagaland Assembly passed the state budget for the financial year 2025-26, which stands at Rs 24,699.83 crore, through a voice vote on the last day of the Assembly session. The budget, tabled by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, who is also the finance minister, has been welcomed as a revolutionary measure for the future of the state, with an emphasis on skill development, culture preservation, and energy solutions.

The budget, which was passed after the 82 state departments’ demand for grants was approved, is set to tackle main concerns while maintaining long-term development. The Assembly further passed the Nagaland Appropriation (No. 3) Bill 2025, allowing for the transfer of funds from the consolidated fund of the state for the new fiscal year.
One of the prominent features of the 2025-26 budget is the inclusion of a number of new schemes for meeting urgent requirements in Nagaland. Of these, there is the Skill Mission, which is a scheme to impart training to 5,000 youths in self-employment and private-sector employment, with a special focus on new industries. There has also been the introduction of the Living Morung Initiative to retain and revive Naga tradition and culture.
The budget also proposes to upgrade the state’s energy infrastructure through the Solar Power Mission, which will lower the state’s energy deficit. Another important project is the creation of a Drone Training Centre, which will provide young people job-related training in drone technology, enabling them to gain useful skills for the future.
Other budgetary highlights are increasing banking facilities to unbanked regions, a Chief Minister’s Fellowship Programme to develop future leaders, the addition of 40 new buses to improve transport, and a thrust to speed up development in interstate border regions.
In his speech on the final day of the session, Speaker Sharingain Longkumer appreciated the budget as one of the most holistic and visionary plans for the development of Nagaland. He lauded Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and his team for their vision and honesty in preparing a budget that meets the challenges of the state and offers a new future.
After passing the budget, Speaker Longkumer declared the constitution of different financial and non-financial committees and adjourned the Assembly sine die.
